Austin City Council Candidate Arrested After ICE Protest

Misael Ramos, one of six candidates running to represent Austin City Council District 1, was arrested over the weekend and charged with participating in a riot, a Class B misdemeanor. The Texas Department of Public Safety accused Ramos of attempting to obstruct traffic during a protest on Sept. 20. [KUT]

  • The protest was over ICE. Ramos was part of a group of protesters who gathered after a federal immigration agent shot and injured Wilbur Rafael Garcés Pérez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan immigrant, during a traffic stop earlier this month. DPS officials say Ramos was moving construction barricades and sandbags to stop traffic. [KVUE]
  • Ramos is out of jail. A large crowd greeted Ramos after his release from the Travis County Jail on Saturday evening. He thanked his neighbor for filming the arrest and reaching out to his friends and family to share what had happened. [Austin-American Statesman]
  • Ramos encouraged people to keep fighting. In a video on Instagram, Ramos said he was fortunate enough to have the resources to get out of jail but said many others aren’t as lucky. He said people need to continue to push for support for other people who have been detained. [Ramos]
  • What to do if you’re arrested during an ICE protest. Democratic State Senator Sarah Eckhardt, who is running for Texas Comptroller, shared resources for anyone DPS arrested in response to the Sept. 20 demonstration, including numbers for the Austin Lawyers Guild and Travis County Public Defenders Office.
