August 6, 2026 · Kelsey Bradshaw
😋 Hi! Southern Living has put out its Southern Food Hall of Fame list and a few Texas greats — Ro-Tel, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Big Red — made the cut! H-E-B’s tortillas are obviously included, too.

What's CITY Talking About

Outer Heaven Disco Club Is Back
Outer Heaven Disco Club will reopen at a new spot on Cesar Chavez Street after closing last April following the landlord’s decision not to renew the venue’s lease. An opening date has not been announced. [Outer Heaven Disco Club]
UT May Ban Bikes, Scooters on Parts of Campus
People using bikes and scooters on the University of Texas at Austin campus will have to walk their devices through the Speedway Pedestrian Mall and other areas starting Aug. 24 if a new proposal is approved. [Austin American-Statesman]
Talarico’s Voting Record Also Called Into Question
James Talarico, the Austin Democrat running for U.S. Senate, may have violated voting laws when he used his parents’ address in five elections after purchasing his own home nearby, an investigation found. Talarico’s Republican opponent Ken Paxton may have violated similar rules after using an address where he hasn’t lived for two years to vote. [The Texas Tribune]

Neighborhood Shoutouts
It's Neighborhood Shoutout time! One of the perks of our membership program, called City Cast Neighbors, is to highlight your favorite people, places, and things around Austin. Here's this week's:
- 📣 Jordan S. wants to shout out GirlForward, an organization providing academic support, mentoring, and more to teenage girls who came to Austin as refugees or asylum seekers.
- 📣 Maurine S. is a fan of Candlelight Ranch, a donor and volunteer-driven natural area that provides kids and families with environmental programming and experiences.
- 📣 Steve W. is impressed that Guero's Taco Bar has remained on South Congress Avenue all these years, keeping a tradition of free live music alive and an old Austin feel.
Want to see your shoutout in the newsletter? Become a member today! Bonus: You'll receive some swag, too. 👀
