The City Wants You To Check Your Ash Trees for a Beetle
A tree-killing beetle, called an Emerald Ash Borer, has been documented in nearby Bell County, and now the city is asking Austinites to check their ash trees for signs of the insect. Symptoms of an infestation include D-shaped holes and increased woodpecker activity. [City of Austin]
Austin Could Become a Sanctuary City for Banned Books
Austin’s Library Commission is urging city council members to designate the city as a “Book Safe Harbor” as the fight over what children can read at schools and in libraries continues. A designation would help the library keep banned books accessible. [Austin Current]
Alamo Drafthouse Is Launching a Film Distribution Program
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is launching a program on July 21 to highlight films from film festivals that don’t get picked up for distribution. The first film is a documentary called “Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt.” [CultureMap Austin]
Walnut Creek Pool Attendance Increased After Fee Slash
Walnut Creek Pool saw its attendance increase from 17,952 visitors in 2023 to 31,568 visitors in 2024 after the city eliminated admission fees. The pool is still free to attend this summer. [KXAN]
