🍔 Whataburger museum?

February 25, 2025 · Kelsey Bradshaw

👀 It may be Monday, but I’m still thinking about this wild story from last week: A ticket counter at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was splashed with black liquid that leaked from the ceiling.

What's CITY Talking About?

Where Is This?

Five mosaic murals of Black baseball players.
Fun fact: Willie Wells mentored Jackie Robinson. (Kelsey Bradshaw/City Cast Austin)

Congratulations to Audrey P. for guessing our last “Where Is This?” correctly! This photo was taken outside Downs Field in East Austin. The field is where the Austin Black Senators baseball team, which was part of the Negro Leagues, played in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940s and 1950s, football players at the city’s only high school for Black students, L.C. Anderson High School, played at the field. The field was named a Texas historical landmark in 2015.

The mosaics, which were made to look like baseball cards, depict iconic players Willie Wells, “Smokey” Joe Williams, Toni Stone, Hilton Smith, and Satchel Paige.

This week’s photo is our last for Black History Month, so I better see a lot of guesses in my inbox!

Do you know where this mural is located? Better yet, can you name any of the people represented in the painting? Respond to this email with your best guess to be featured in next Monday’s newsletter!
