💰 City Approves New Funding for Red River Cultural District

Austin City Council members voted to fund the Red River Cultural District, a non-profit supporting businesses in the Red River downtown area, via a multi-year contract with the Red River Merchants Association. The contract comes after the organization asked for monetary donations in October to stay afloat. [Instagram]

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa plans to step down after the party’s March meeting following a rough election season for the Democrats. Hinojosa’s resignation was announced a day after he apologized for blaming Democrats' losses, in part, on immigration and transgender issues. [KUT]

🏗️ Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin Mural Closer to Demolition

The Austin Historic Landmark Commission voted this week to advance a demolition permit for a downtown building that was damaged in a February fire. The building’s exterior houses a mural of Willie Nelson and Janis Joplin. City staff will review the permit application next. [Austin Business Journal]

Congratulations to Kyle K. for guessing last week’s “Where Is This?” correctly! This photo was taken at the Blanton Museum of Art. The piece is part of the museum’s “Long Live Surrealism! 1924-Today” exhibit, which is open through Jan. 12. You should absolutely go check the exhibit out! It’s weird and spooky and fun.
