What's CITY Talking About?
🥪 The Komeback Is On!
Katz’s Deli is returning to the original location on Sixth St., where the original operated from 1979 to 2011. The owners recently purchased the building in bankruptcy court but waited until the sale was final to announce a return. [Austin American-Statesman]

🎙️ Why City Council Absences Matter
KXAN recently reported that District 1 councilmember Natasha Harper-Madison has been absent from a disproportionate amount of council meetings. We spoke to Axios reporter Nicole Cobler about what her absences mean for constituents and to her colleagues on City Council. [City Cast Austin 🎧]
🚔 License Plate Cameras Return
The Austin Police Department’s license plate reader program is now operating 40 cameras across the city under new guidelines. Data retention is now limited to one week, down from 30 days, and officers must undergo training before accessing the database. [KXAN]

🤑 Mayoral Race Hits Donation Dilemma
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and challenger Doug Greco are facing allegations of violating campaign finance laws ahead of the November election. A complaint filed in July alleges that both exceeded the $46,000 limit on non-local campaign donations. The Ethics Review Commission is reviewing the claims and potential sanctions later this month. Don't Go Gently, Go In Tecovas
We’re dedicating this week’s Don’t Go Gently tip of the weekend to Austin’s Mexican free-tailed bat colony, the 1.5 million creatures that call the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge home for a few months every year. To celebrate the end of their Austin staycation, join the fun on Saturday at the Bat Fest, for music, activities for kids, food, drinks, and of course, bats, which fly out from under the bridge about 30 minutes before sundown. Tickets are $30, costumes are encouraged, and the music starts at 3 p.m. Headliners include Paul Wall, Pecos and the Rooftops, Ghostland Observatory, and DJ Grip. Don’t go gently, go in Tecovas!
