🏠 What makes an Austin building historic?

August 19, 2024 · Kelsey Bradshaw

Hello, hello! Welcome to a new week. Have y’all seen this story about an Austin guy selling a smoker that he claims is possessed by Anthony Bourdain’s spirit?

Thank you to Tecovas, our exclusive launch sponsor and Western wear favs for their support!

What's CITY Talking About?

💸 Austin Is Less Luxurious Than Other Texas Cities

An Austin Business Journal analysis found that Austin trails behind Houston and Dallas in the number of luxury brands with physical stores in town. We only have 24 out of 50. Honestly, I consider this a win! [Austin Business Journal]

🎙️ How a Building Becomes a Landmark

🤔 Is There Too Much Christianity in Elementary Schools?

A report from the Austin-based Texas Freedom Network says the state’s curriculum for elementary reading includes materials that depict Christian beliefs as facts and gives little attention to religions other than Christianity. [Austin American-Statesman]

🚘 I-35 Lanes Are Getting Smaller

The Texas Department of Transportation will start shrinking the lanes on Interstate 35 in the next few months as part of the I-35 Capital Express Central project. The lanes will go from 12 feet to 11 feet to make room for more lanes on a stretch of the highway from Ben White Boulevard to U.S. 290 East. [KUT]

Where Is This?

A red and white striped mural with an image of Willie Nelson in the middle. The mural reads "Willie for president."
I love this mural. (Kelsey Bradshaw/ City Cast Austin)

Congratulations to Kevin C. for guessing where last week’s photo was taken! And, a second congratulations to our social media winner, Lisa H.! This Willie Nelson mural is on the side of STAG Provisions For Men at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Elizabeth Street.

Next up in our guessing game:

A turquoise mural with a slice of bread and a pad of butter. The bread says "You're my" and the butter says "Butter half." A red heart is painted between the two.
Hint: This is not in South Austin. (Kelsey Bradshaw/ City Cast Austin)

OK, I know you’re familiar with this mural. It’s an Austin classic. But do you know where it is? Hit reply to this email with your best guess to be featured in next Monday’s newsletter!
