We don’t have a “Where Is It?” this week, but I want to congratulate Linda Fisher for being the first correct guesser of last week’s spot! This is at Laguna Gloria in Tarrytown.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 Former Uvalde School District Police Chief Arrested

A Uvalde County grand jury indicted former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo and former officer Adrian Gonzales on child endangerment charges for their actions during the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting that left 21 dead, including 19 fourth-graders. [San Antonio Express-News]

  • Arredondo and Gonzales are the first law enforcement officials to face criminal charges related to the shooting. At least 380 officers responded to the campus, and it took 77 minutes for someone to confront the shooter.

⛱️ More Shade Coming to Austin Parks

Some public parks, pools, and playgrounds in town are receiving new shade structures as part of a $4 million city effort to make Austin heat-resilient. Most of the structures will be added to spots in East Austin, where temperatures tend to be higher. [KUT]

⚖️ SCOTUS Upholds Austin Camping Ban

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 opinion, found that camping bans like Austin’s are not cruel or unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment. Back in 2019, Austin City Council repealed the city’s camping ban, then in 2021, Austin voters reinstated it. The court’s decision means people experiencing homelessness can once again be fined for sleeping in public places. [Austin American-Statesman]

What To Do

🌡️ Some wonderful weather news before I go: Austin will likely have fewer triple-digit temperature days than 2023! National Weather Service meteorologists told Austin Monthly that the city may only see 33 days with high temperatures at 100 degrees or above this summer. Let’s cross our fingers that forecast stays true through August!
