🌞 Good morning! I hope y’all had a great Juneteenth! Have you considered filling out my Austin summer bucket list survey so I can look good in front of my new bosses? 😇

What's CITY Talking About?

🎙️ Happy Summer Solstice!
It’s the longest day of the year and we’re talking all things weather with CBS Austin’s Avery Tomasco on today’s episode. What’s going on with Lake Travis? Will this summer be as brutally hot as last? And Tomasco tells us about hurricane season. [City Cast Austin]
🚓 32 Apply to be Next Police Chief
Thirty-two people applied to be Austin Police Department’s next chief, including an APD sergeant and a former APD commander accused of strangling a woman during sex, documents obtained by the American-Statesman show. Other applicants include law enforcement officials from all over the U.S. Next, City Manager T.C. Broadnax will narrow the pool down and identify top candidates for interviews, Mayor Kirk Watson said. [Austin American-Statesman]
📝 UT Slashes Communications Department
About 20 University of Texas marketing and communications employees were abruptly laid off this month in a move by the university to focus on “managing reputational issues and crises.” The changes come after a tumultuous spring semester on campus, with pro-Palestinian protests and other faculty layoffs resulting from the implementation of state law banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs. 🚂 Texas AG Stops Light Rail
A trial to determine if the financing model for Austin’s light rail is legal was stopped on Monday, when Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an appeal. An appellate court now must decide whether the trial court even has jurisdiction to hear the case. [Austin Business Journal]

An update on the Round Rock shooting before I go: You can now help the families of the women killed in the shooting, Lyndsey Vicknair, 33, of Manor; and Ara Duke, 54, of Pflugerville. A GoFundMe has been set up for Vicknair’s family, which includes her three children. Duke’s family is asking that people donate to her favorite causes: NPH USA and the Boys and Girls Club of the Austin Area.
Additionally, several entities are offering rewards for information that leads to an arrest in the shooting: Gov. Greg Abbott is offering a $10,000 reward for information; and the Williamson County Crime Stoppers and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are each offering $5,000 rewards. You can send tips by calling Texas Crime Stoppers at: 1-800-252-8477. You can also submit a tip to the Texas Department of Public Safety online.
