⚖️ The latest on the Daniel Perry case

June 17, 2024 · Kelsey Bradshaw

😎 Morning! How was everyone’s weekend? Is anyone else watching the new season of “Love Island USA?” It’s my first time watching Love Island, and I’m mostly tuning in for “Vanderpump Rules’” Ariana Madix as host, but I’m loving it so far. Lots of Texas cuties to watch. Thank you to Tecovas, our exclusive launch sponsor and Western wear favs for their support!

🎙️ Breaking Down the Daniel Perry Case

Today on the podcast, City Cast Austin Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by investigative reporter Tony Plohetski to discuss a criminal case involving Daniel Perry. Gov. Greg Abbott recently pardoned Perry, who had been convicted of murder for killing Garrett Foster, a Black Lives Matter protestor, in July of 2020 in downtown Austin. [City Cast Austin]

🥲 A Texas Dad and Texas Barbecue

This story is such a special treat, especially right around Father’s Day. It’s about a family who has been working at Lockhart’s Kreuz Market, now Smitty’s Market, for generations. I absolutely got choked up at the story’s final sentence: “I tore a small nibble of brisket and passed it to my son’s tiny hands for his first taste of where he comes from.” [The New York Times]

🏠 Austin Rents Keep Dropping

On average, Austin apartments are renting right now for $1,528, down by $100 a month from 2023. That decrease is the longest sustained drop in rental prices Austin has seen in the last decade, according to data from Zillow. [KUT]

🥵 Travis County is Abnormally Dry

The latest map from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that Travis County is currently experiencing abnormally dry conditions. I know it seems superfluous to include this, because hey, if you’ve been outside anytime lately, you probably already knew that. But now it’s been confirmed by meteorologists and climatologists! Where Is This?

A colorful mural that reads "unity" and "community."
This mural is located next to the stone arch on the Butler Hike and Bike Trail in East Austin on Riverview Street. (Kelsey Bradshaw/City Cast Austin)

Congratulations to Hey Austin reader Nicole Russo, who knew exactly where last week’s photo was taken! She guessed: “I think the mural is along Town Lake Trail by the Metz Neighborhood Park!” It absolutely is along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail near Metz Neighborhood Park – this mural sits next to the now-defunct Holly Street Power Plant, near the intersection of Riverview and Robert T Martinez Jr. streets in East Austin.

Up next in our “Where Is This?” journey:

Here’s a really helpful hint: This image was taken in Austin. 🙂 (Kelsey Bradshaw/City Cast Austin)

What To Do

Monday, June 17

🌎 Mr. Worldwide is coming to Austin! Sorry, I couldn’t end the newsletter without talking about Pitbull. Pitbull, the bald, sunglassed rapper, will be at the University of Texas’ SEC party on June 30. The university is throwing a free concert, with games and food, in honor of its move to the Southeastern Conference. And Pitbull will be there?!?!? SEE Y’ALL THERE.
