🎒 UT To End Remote Work

Remote UT staffers will have to be back on campus in August, President Jay Hartzell announced this week, much to the dismay of the Texas State Employees Union. Anne Lewis, a UT faculty member on the union’s executive board for Central Texas, fears some staffers will quit over the decision. [Austin American-Statesman]

🎞️ Sony Acquires Alamo Drafthouse

Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired Alamo Drafthouse and its festival, Fantastic Fest. The Austin-born cinema chain, founded in 1997, experienced financial woes in recent years, filing for bankruptcy in 2021. [Austin Chronicle]

🌿 Judge Dismisses AG’s Lawsuit Against Austin

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s attempt to force Austin to prosecute low-level marijuana offenses failed this week in a Travis County District Court. Earlier this year, Paxton sued the city over the voter-approved Austin Freedom Act, which deprioritized citations and arrests for misdemeanor marijuana offenses. [KVUE]
